My teaching philosophy...

Always having music play a major role in her life, pianist and music educator Melody Chan-Li, is constantly seeking new and creative ways to share this wonderful art form with others.  Melody has been teaching for over a decade and thoroughly enjoys the process of working with different people to bring out their joy of music.  Her teaching philosophy is rooted in providing all of her students with strong fundamentals; so that they are able to comfortably learn any sort of repertoire they so choose.  Melody's teaching style is an impressive blend of all the mentors whom she has been greatly privileged to work with.  Combining teaching methodologies from French, Russian and North American schools of piano playing, she has a wealth of different approaches to cater to each of her students’ needs.  Recently she has been trained in Suzuki Unit 1 to further enhance her work with young beginners. This summer, her guest workshops for early childhood music education, have been extremely well received by arts and community schools throughout the Vancouver lower mainland.  Melody's advanced students have also achieved distinction in their RCM piano exams and won prizes at local music festivals.  She further offers theory and music history classes for all levels in order to provide a well rounded musical education for all her students.

Testimonials

"Melody and Matthew are two accomplished pianists and great piano teachers. We have had the privilege to have them both teach my daughter since she was 4 years old. They always look for fun, age appropriate ways to help our daughter overcome difficulties and weak points, and inspire musicality and love of music along the way.  We are truly impressed with their professionalism, patience and encouragement.  Our experience with Melody and Matthew has been very rewarding, and we will recommend both of them to any piano students without any reservations."

"Being an adult student, I had been concerned about my learning processes before meeting with Melody and Matthew. But they created such a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere at every single lesson and guided me with their incredibly warm-hearted patience by providing me with effective practice strategies and a lot of ideas for my smaller-set hands! They are both amazingly dedicated musicians and passionate teachers with a sincere love toward music. I could feel it when I opened the door and saw their faces with big welcoming smiles. I truly enjoyed learning different perspectives of music from them, ranging from techniques, theory, art, history, philosophy, a variety of instruments, literature, dance, and … to mathematics! Thank you, Melody and Matthew, for guiding me to a new stage of my life in enjoying the beauty and wonder of music."
